    Marathi Natyamahotav - April 2007
Makadachya Haati Champagne & Final Draft

Our last event of “Marathi Natyamahotsav” held on April 15th at Hindu Temple Auditorium, Flushing was a grand event. MMNY hosted this type of event for the first time in its history and it turned out to be a fabulous program.

Dr. Mohan Agashe and all artists arrived at the venue at 9am and immediately started working to setup the stage, test lights and sound systems. By noon everything was almost setup and the audience started arriving. The show started on time as scheduled at 1pm. Mrs. Rupali Rajpathak welcomed Dr. Agashe and all artists. She then introduced our distinguished guest, Mrs. Deo, Indian Consulate General in New York. Mrs. Deo spoke few words. Dr. Mohan Agashe then welcomed all and gave some background about the plays.

Both plays “Makadachya Haati Champagne” and “Final Draft” were extremely well written, directed and performed. No wonder these plays and these talented artists have won so many awards in India and abroad.

About 210 people attended the Natyamahotsav. Everyone from the audience enjoyed every minute of the event. We heard lots of good remarks about this event from the audience during interval. The auditorium was fantastic and the snacks in the interval were delicious. Overall the entire show was a great success.

We thank Dr. Agashe & all artists for bringing these 2 great performances to us and hope that we’ll get more of them in future. We also thank all volunteers (Mayur Shetye, Nikhil, Anil & Gauri Keluskar, Santosh Naik, Ramdeep & especially Mr. Ram Inamdar) who helped us in this event (before and after the show). Without them the show could not have been made possible. We thank all 3 families (Sunil Naik, Rupali Inamdar) for hosting the artists at their home after the event for 2 days. And finally we thank all audience who attended, enjoyed and encouraged us and artists even in the bad stormy weather.

    Kojagiri 2005

Maharashtra Mandal, New York (MMNY) celebrated Kojagiri Poornima on Saturday, 12th October 2005 with a sensational musical performance by renowned classical singer -Mrs. Lata Vinod . This time, the program was held at Intermediate School 5 (IS 5) located on Jacobus Street in Elmhurst NY; one of our alternate venues. To enjoy the true spirit of Kojagiri Poornima, the program was held late in the evening, from 6:00pm to 9:00pm.

Mrs. Lata Vinod who is from Delaware, is a truly gifted artist who began her musical career at the age of 10 by performing in Gammat Jammat, an All India Radio show for young children. Since then, she has performed in a variety of programs in India and abroad, and has won several awards.

The theme for the program was of Kojagiri Poornima itself, making it even more interesting and enjoyable. Some of the songs presented that reflected this theme were 'Chandra Aahe Sakshila', 'Raatra Aahe Pournimechi', 'Ha khel Savalyancha', 'Chandane Shimpit Jaashi', 'Shukra Tara Manda Vara' and 'Kaivalyacha Candanyala'.

Mr. Sachin Raje accompanied Mrs. Lata Vinod as the lead singer. The two were well supported by Mr. Hemakalyan Bapat on tabla, Mr. Rajendra Vaishampayan on harmonium, Mr. Prashant Gijare on keyboard, and Mr. Satyajit Limaye on flute. Apart from being the lead singer, Mr. Sachin Raje also played tabla for some of the songs.

Mrs. Gayatri Vaishampayan did an excellent job narrating the program by cleverly blending the theme of Kojagiri with the theme of individual songs.

Dinner was served by MMNY after the program at 8:00pm. Since we were celebrating Kojagiri Poornima, Basundi was served as one of the sweets.

Due to rain and thunderstorms, the attendance was less than the anticipated number. Yet, about 100-120 members and guests did brave the difficult weather and were aptly rewarded by this enchanting performance.

The program was presided over by Mr. Ashok Tamhane. Mrs. Shubhada Dalavi presented the vote of thanks.

She congratulated ‘Rangdeep’ Team and appreciated particularly pictures/articles by kids in the magazine. During her speech she also suggested to bring out a special RANGDEEP issue dedicated to the issues of elderly persons. While responding to her suggestion, Vasant Ghag-editor of this year’s issue promised to consider her suggestion, but not for the special issue but for a separate section for elderly. On this occasion, Dr. Ushadevi Kolhatkar gave a speech narrating in brief the ‘India Project’ of Dr, Sharadchandra Dicksheet and appealed all the present to support the project which Dr. Dicksheet has undertaken to help disabled children of third world.

    Ganesh Festival 2003

Though Ganesh Festival is celebrated on the large scale back home in the state of Maharashtra, here in US, Marathi Community is not in a position to do so. The reasons are different and can’t be discussed here. But we do want to remember Lord Ganesh and celebrate Ganesh Festival in our own little way. That is how we started celebrating it in Maharashtra Mandal, New York and over the years, it remains the most popular program.

It was in the same tradition the Maharashtra Mandal, New York celebrated Ganesh Festival on Sunday the 7th September 2003 at Junior High School 217, Jamaica. Almost 300 members and their guests were present on the occasion.

The Pooja, performed by a very respected couple – Dr. Anil & Jyotsna Ankolekar, commenced at 10:00 AM under the guidance of priest Mrs. Sunita Vaze. The Ganesh Idol from Bapu Narvekar, was decorated with Makhar provided by Neelesh & Manasi Karnik. Following the Pooja, a large gathering of those present assembled to sing traditional AARATIS. This year, Mr. Vijay Gokhale had compiled the set of these AARATIS and supplied booklets to MMNY to distribute them for FREE to those attending the program.

Over the years, we have also observed that members attending this program are more interested in Ganesh Puja and the Mahaprasad. Hence, we arrange the entertainment programs of short duration on this occasion. Accordingly, this year, a parody titled ISHKACHA SARDAR, by Mr. Suhas & Alka Pai was presented. It was a program with songs & dances depicting the story. It really started off very well since it was hinted at recent scandal in US history. However the end of the show was so abrupt that audience felt the show incomplete. However, all the participants did their roles very well. All the songs were also good, but felt very lengthy considering the contents of the show.

After the entertainment program, MAHAPRASAD was served to all present. This was well arranged and managed by Meena Raje and other committee members and volunteers.

At the end of the day UTTARPUJA was performed and people departed to meet at the next and another popular program of Diwali Festival.

    Ganesh Festival 2002

Ganapati, Gajanana, Ganesha – the God most worshipped by all the Maharashtrians, is not confined to Hindu religion alone. It was more than a Century ago, Lokmanya Tilak gave a social and cultural manifestation to the worship of Ganesha, which marked the beginning of Ganeshotsava – the Ganesha Festival.

It was in the same tradition the Maharashtra Mandal, New York celebrated Ganeshotsava on Sunday the 15th September 2002 at Junior High School 217, Jamaica. Almost 250 members and their guests were present on the occasion, proving once again the growing enthusiasm of the members by participating in the activities of Maharashtra Mandal.

The Pooja, performed by a very graceful young couple – Amit and Vidisha Marathe, commenced at 10:00 AM under the guidance of priest Mrs. Sunita Vaze. Following the Pooja, a large gathering of people assembled on the stage and sung the Aaratis in traditional fervor.

After a brief announcement by Mr. Suresh Deshmukh on the progress of the preparations for proposed BMM Convention, Mrs. Meena Raje, the Program Coordinator of Maharashtra Mandal, introduced the visiting artist – Mr. Vasant Ajgaonkar, the famous singer from Maharashtra.

Mr. Ajgaonkar presented Geetramayan – Maharashtra’s evergreen musical program. In a short time, with the choicest songs, he brought forth the full lyrical prowess of Late G. D. Madgulkar (also known as modern Valmiki of Maharashtra). The great compositions by Late Sudhir Phadke took the older generation back in time while the younger generation got a glimpse of the most popular songs for last few decades. The program also turned out as an apt tribute to Mr. Sudhir Phadke, who recently passed away.

Mr. Ajgaonkar was ably accompanied by his son Mr. Koustubh Ajgaonkar on Tabla and Mr. Nagesh Shirsat on Harmonium. Mr. Sudhir Karnik, Vice President of Maharashtra Mandal concluded the session with a vote of thanks.

The climax of the day was Mahaprasad – the Grand Lunch with handful but choicest cuisine of different parts of India. It was also an opportunity for the people to mingle and exchange pleasantries. Finally, after the Uttarpooja, if was time to part company, promising each other to meet again next month at the Diwali Program.

    Annual Picnic 2002

Summer is already on and to take the advantage of beautiful summer weather, we had our annual picnic on Sunday, 21st July 2002 at Hempstead Lake State Park, Long Island, New York. This year we reverted back to our venue for the last many years before switching on to Valley Stream State Park up to last year.

This program was open to both members and non-members without any participation fee. We encouraged people to join the picnic with their family and friends. The assembly time was given as 11:00 a.m. but the few committee members arrived at the park well in advance to reserve the spot and also welcome the participating people. A banner of Maharashtra Mandal was also placed to enable members/non members to locate the spot.

By the way, very few people were aware that this was the Mandal’s 25th Silver Jubilee picnic since we had first picnic way back in 1978. Since we could not arrange celebrations in time, we propose to have 25th anniversary picnic on grand scale next year.

People started coming at the spot right from 11:00 a.m. till 12 noon. Fortunately the weather was fine on that day with less humidity and temperatures within the range on 750-800 F.With a lot of greenery at the spot, the day was really enjoyable. Approx. 60 persons participated.

At around 12 noon, BHEL was given by the Maharashtra Mandal to everybody present. Each one was asked to bring his/her own lunch. At around 1:30 p.m., all the food materials were placed on one table and we had a community lunch. In the meantime, people formed their own groups with some enjoying chatting with their old friends and some playing games. Our president Mrs. Neela Inamdar also practiced LEZIM with interested members that we propose to present at India Day parade in New York scheduled on Sunday 18th August.

At around 4:30 p.m. we decided to wind up and everybody went home thinking of the next opportunity to be together.

One interesting thing. Mr. Rahul Kulkarni from New York City had joined the picnic by searching our website on the Internet, visiting the site thereafter and reading about our picnic program. When he mentioned this to the committee member there, everybody was happy and encouraged him to be a part of Maharashtra Mandal. Each one of you visiting the site is welcomed not only to participate in the programs but also be a part of Maharashtra Mandal

    Raag Mala 2002

The last program of Maharashtra Mandal held on 2nd June 2002 at 3:00 p.m. at Junior High School (JHS) 217, the usual venue in Jamaica, New York. It was the musical evening titled “RAAGMALA” with Marathi/Hindi songs based on Indian Classical Music presented by a group of local artists.

As you are well aware that Indian music, be it film music , or music from Marathi dramas, folk songs, spiritual songs or any other form of music, has a long tradition of classical music. Music composers from various parts of India have taken inspiration from this classical music tradition to create melody in their music. RAAGMALA was one such program which presented various types of songs based on classical music.

Initially an idea floated by Shirish Thanawala, formulated by Ravindra Raje, Suresh Benegal and presented by a group of talented artists from New York and New Jersey that included all the three persons mentioned above, RAAGMALA was not only a melodious musical evening but also a nostalgic experience to many from the audience.

The format of the program was as under:

First, the information about a particular Raga was given, then the abridged version of same Raga was played on the instruments, thereafter either Marathi or Hindi song and followed by another Hindi or Marathi song. One good thing was that not the whole songs but the short versions of songs were presented. Total 23 Ragas were covered. The songs presented showed some similarity since they were based on the same RAGA even though they were from different languages. But each song also had the stamp of the individual music composer. One popular Gujarati song “VAISHNAV JAN TO TEN KAHIYE” and two Marathi songs written by Vijay Pathare and composed by Ravindra Raje were also presented.

As far as artists are concerned, everybody did an excellent job. The main male singer Shirish Thanwala did an exemplary job. He was in the perfect tune and his songs gave tremendous joy to everybody in the audience. The three female singers were Mrs. Ranjana Katre, Mrs. Sujata Benegal and Mrs. Vaishali Patankar. Each of them rendered their songs so beautifully that there were requests for “ONCE MORE “ from the audience to most of the songs. Sudhir Karnik also presented one Gazal. Below is the list of some songs presented at the program:

  • GHAN GHAN MALA NABHI DATLYA, KOSALTEE DHARA
  • RADHA KAISE NA JALE-LAGAAN
  • MA N MOHANA BADE JUHTE-SEEMA
  • PASAYDAAN
  • JANE KAHAAN GAY WHO DIN-MERA NAAM JOKER

Ravindra Raje (Violin), Suresh Benegal (Sanvadini), Arun Tankhiwale(Tabla) and Sudhir Karnik (Keyboard), each of them had excellent synchronization with singers and among themselves. That emphasized that they had done many rehearsals before the program. We were told at the end of the program that they had 15/20 rehearsals during the last 4 months.

Mr. Vivek Bendre, dressed suitably for such programs conducted the program nicely narrating each Raga and the songs that followed. The narration written by Arun Tankhiwale was also informative.

Each person in the audience, a fairly good crowd despite the beautiful day outside, enjoyed the program which was evident form the number of people coming to the stage to congratulate the artists after the program ended. Some were congratulating each of them.

This was a truly nostalgic experience for most of us who don’t get any opportunity like this to listen to so many melodious songs form the past era at one place. Everybody went home after the program humming some of the songs presented.

RAAGMALA will always remain one of the memorable programs of the Maharashtra Mandal.

    Gudhi Padwa 2002

The first program of the New Year of the Maharashtra Mandal celebrating Gudhipadwa was held on the Sunday 31st March, 2002 at the JHS 217 auditorium in Jamaica, New York. On this occasion a play titled “Lekure Udand Zhali” was staged by Maharashtra Mandal of Toronto, Canada. The play writtten by Late Shri Vasant Kanetkar and directed by Mrs. Medha & Prakash Date was a musical carrying on the tradition of Marathi Musicals strated in the good old days of Late Shri Balgandharva, Dinanth Mangeshkar and so on. The story revolved around the couple who has no child after the 12 years of marriage. While the husband seeks happiness in playing with the children in the neighborhood, the wife is busy and happy with keeping the house clean with the help of their servant. The couple is also mulling over the thought of adopting the child where wife wants her sister’s son and the husband wants his brother’s daughter. The plays depicts how their relatives and other friends are after their money and how they try to manipulate the couple when the husband loses his money in filmmaking. In the climax, wife is shown getting pregnant after a long time; partly because of the prayers of their servant and how they realize the beauty and joy of having a child.

The excellent direction by Medha & Prakash Date was the highlight of the play. Shri Milind Karandikar playing husband and Mrs. Leena Deodhare playing wife gave excellent performances and also rendered their songs beautifully. They were supported by the rest of the cast by performing their individual roles satisfactorily.

Since it was a musical , the highlight of the play was its music. The music was light and composed according to the theme of the play and the changing times. The credit here goes to Shri Deepak Sant, Yashodhan Nawathe and Rajashri Karandikar. The set and lighting for the play were also good.

There was a good crowd of members and well wishers of the Mandal and almost everybody enjoyed the play as per reaction gathered after the play. The play was also witnessed by Mrs. Vandana Tilak, President of Brihan Maharashtra Mandal of North America who was in the city to attend the meeting in connection with the convention to be held in July 2003.

Overall the program was a great success.
